When I was a young boy sitting at the table
Staring at some Brussels sprouts that were staring back at me
When Momma said to eat ‘em all, I thought I wasn’t able
But I can still remember what my Momma said to me

She said:
Don’t knock it if you haven’t tried it
Don’t close your eyes ‘til you wait and see
Don’t waste it, wait until you taste it
Don’t lock the door ‘til you find the key

Later I was on my own, eighteen years and far from home
I met a pretty lady who was young and wild and free
When she said I could have it all, I thought I shouldn’t take it
But there was something real familiar in the words she said to me

She said:
Don’t knock it if you haven’t tried it
Don’t close your eyes ‘til you wait and see
Don’t waste it, wait until you taste it
Don’t lock the door ‘til you find the key

Many years have come and gone, and many roads I’ve taken
And many times I’ve had to make a choice:
Is it right or is it wrong, and what if I’m mistaken?
Then suddenly from deep inside I hear my Momma’s voice

She says:
Son, we've tried to raise you right with love and understanding
And give you all you've needed to be all you want to be
So when you're trying to decide, let your conscience be your guide
With an open heart and an open mind keep searching for the key

And don't knock it if you haven't tried it
Don't close your eyes 'til you wait and see
Don't waste it, wait until you taste it
Don't lock the door 'til you find the key
