I threw away a good job, started playin’ in a band
Moved out of the city, tried to live off of the land
But the land I found was barren and winter nights were cold
And I was slowly starvin’ in my body and my soul

The music was the best part of that year in Tennessee
We sang that country honky-tonk in three-part harmony
We had a local following that came to hear us play
But I was slowly starvin’ and I had to get away

I’ve got to take a leave of absence (he’s taken leave of his senses)
Got tired of takin’ chances (burnin’ bridges, buildin’ fences)
I left it all behind to try to get it all together
And some day I’m gonna bring it all back home

In the darkness of the mornin’, when the last song has been sung
And beer has filled my mind again, and smoke has filled my lungs
Then I wonder if the life I lead is worth the price I pay
And I wonder if this emptiness will ever go away

Ain’t it funny how it all turns out when you try to live your dreams
And what you thought you cared about is not the way it seems
And what you want and what you need are never quite the same
I guess you’ve got to learn the rules before you try to win the game

I’ve got to take a leave of absence (he’s taken leave of his senses)
Got tired of takin’ chances (burnin’ bridges, buildin’ fences)
I left it all behind to try to get it all together
And some day I’m gonna bring it all back home

I left it all behind to try to get it all together
And some day I’m gonna bring it all back home
