She wakes up in the morning just to face another day
Wanders down the hallway as she wipes the sleep away
Wonders why she always has this feeling
That she wants to run away... She's so lonely

She's a wife and she's a mother and she works from 9 to 5
And she's waiting to discover what it means to be alive
And she's looking for an answer
Looking for a reason to believe...
To survive

Once upon a time, she had the world on a string
And she was mine, now that doesn't mean a thing
And she can't find any reason to be
'Happy ever after'

And every now and then, she stops and thinks about
The way it was back when, when she was living
In a dream that would not end...
But that was once upon a time

She comes home in the evening and gets the family fed
Then she sits and watches TV, and she wanders off to bed
And she lies awake for hours, and she reads her books
And reads her magazines...

And I'm lying there beside her, but I don't know what to say
When I try to talk things over, she just turns the other way
How I long to take and hold her, and tell her
Everything will be alright, but I just say…
'Good night...'

But once upon a time, I had the world on a string
And she was mine, now that doesn't mean a thing
And we can't find any reason to be
'Happy ever after'

And every now and then, I stop and think about
The way it was back when, when we were living
In a dream that would not end...
But that was once upon a time
